Next Steps is carried out for the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). The DCSF is responsible for providing many services for young people, not just education. You can find out more about what DCSF does by going to their website here: www.dcsf.gov.uk.
When Next Steps started, in 2004, it was carried out for the former Department for Education and Skills (DfES). DCSF and the Department for Innovation and Universities and Skills (DIUS), were created, as a result of the re-organisation of government in June 2007, to take over the responsibilities of DfES. Both DCSF and DIUS sponsor Next Steps with the Next Steps management team based in DCSF.
Although the study is principally run by the DCSF, many other areas of Government are interested in it too. For example, the Department of Work and Pensions are interested in young people in work or looking for jobs, the Learning and Skills Council wants to know the views of those in FE colleges and training, while the Home Office is concerned about how safe young people feel when they go out and so on.
Who carries out the interviews for the study?
Because we talk to such a large number of people, the interviews are actually carried out by three research agencies working together, all of them among the

An interviewer from one of these three agencies came to your house to talk to you previously. On the letters you have received about the study in the past, there will have been a unique serial number. If your serial number starts with 1 or 4, then your interviewer was from BMRB, if it starts with 2 or 5, then your interviewer was from GfK NOP, and if it starts with 3 or 6, your interviewer was from Ipsos MORI.
